Default Finally... project starts today

Helped a friend get his Softtail Slim back together after a plethora of powder coating parts.. .. now, my turn in the garage

Starting the tear-down today for:

Fat front conversion:
Fat Bob trees
WideGlide fork sliders
WideGlide hub w/ 16x3 FLHTCU smooth profile rim laced on w/SS spokes, wrapped with a Michelin Commander II 130.
Fat Bob (fat kid) front fender

For the rear:
16x5 FLHTCU smooth profile rim laced on stock rear FXDC hub w/custom SS spokes, wrapped by Dunlop D407 180.

Powder coat:
(RAL 5011, w/ 50% Starbright, darn close to Deep Blue Pearl)
Fork sliders
side covers
triple trees
intake tube
front fender

Preventative Maint:
Cam tensioners (using S&S Quickie pushrod kit)
PredatorVCS front motor mount
Gas gauge gasket
trip/meter switch boot
New steering head bearings
New front hub bearings
New double platinum plugs
New K&N air filter
Caliper rebuilds, new brakes.
.. and various new polished stainless bolts.

.. oh yeah.. oil change and a couple of tuning runs

Maybe the new Kuryakyn fork mounted passing lamps.... not sure they are going to look as good on this as I first thought... those and other take-offs will be for sale at the end of the project.

I do all my own work, including the wheel lacing & truing... so I'll post some pics as I go... or as I remember to..

It's gorgeous here ... probably another week to get the parts back from powder coat... doing everything I can in the meantime... calipers, lace the new rear rim ( gotta polish the old hub first though, it's nasty... lol ), cam tensioners...etc. hopefully not more than two more weekends..

So.. getting prepped to lace the stock hub onto the new rear rim... but oh man, that hub is dirty... and it's not a polished hub either.... so... opened up a can of elbow grease... lol

Hub_1 is how it looked right after I had the tire unmounted and I unlaced it from the stock rim.

Hub_2, is after 400 wet sanding.

Hub_3, is after 2000 wet sanding.

Next comes the polish wheels....

If it's your 08 then tensioners don't need looking at until 80K and you don't need to pull the pushrods to inspect them...and I would not in a million years use adjustable pushrods....they went out with the Shovelhead and are so old skool it's not funny....."do the job properly or don't do it at all" is what its says on my tool box...

Thanks for your opinion Spanner. I've read several posts where the feet wore out much earlier than that... on 07 and up models... so you know, ounce of prevention kinda thing going on here...

So tell me, how do 'you' inspect the tensioner on the cam-to-cam chain? Or do you assume it's condition based on the condition of the crank-to-cam chain tensioner.

I guess I'm lucky I'm me, 'cause I like old skool, and all the jobs I do are 'proper'. I simply didn't want to pull rockers this time around. In a year or two when I do cams... I'll consider it, 'cause there may be head-work happening at the same time.

Cheers
