Easy Fat Bob/Fat Boy Headlight Question
Guys,
I spent the better part of the afternoon looking and reading about changing a Fat Bob headlight. I love it and decided to do it. I hate asking questions that are answered around the forum but I'm running into the problem of having so much information available that I'm beginning to get a little confused as to what parts I will need. According to the Harley shop (of course) I need about $350 worth of parts but that didn't seem to be true from what I've read on here. I'm a beginner when it comes to working on my bike so I'm taking it one thing at a time but some help is needed.
Can someone who has made the switch give me a no-s&*t answer on what parts I'll need to pick up for a 2011 Fat Bob? Thanks! And again, sorry for repeating some other posts!

I bought a "second" (small blemish) flamed adjure 7" bullet headlight off of ebay for $125 and then got a $35 chrome mount block, some chromed hardware from Ace's auto/motorcycle hardware section for about $10, and used some of my electrical wiring stuff in my tool box. Since the 7" was a 3 wire generic I had to splice it in to the wiring for the stock light. If I had gone with a standard bucket I could have gotten the price down to around $50 for the headlight but I wanted the bullet look and I already had a 7" LED headlamp assembly off of my Jeep ready to go.
A search for 7" headlight assembly will typically find a pretty good variety of lights to choose from and most of them come with everything but the bulb and the mounting block. Then you will just need new bolts and a new mounting block because the mount for the twin lights isn't going to work for a single. I wouldn't even bother trying to keep the old mounting block anyways as I sold my twin lights assembly complete for more than the cost of switching to the bullet.
Harley is basically quoting you the cost of unplugging your light from the stock harness and removing the complete headlight assembly including mounting block and replacing it with a Harley light assembly that fits your stock plug. If you don't want to modify any of the wiring this is the way to go. If you feel comfortable about splicing wires and don't want to spend that much then the route I listed is the way to do it. I included a pic of mine.

I have a 2010 but pretty sure the parts are the same. Here's what I ordered and installed:
1) DBI 7" Fatboy/Heritage-Style 55W DOT Headlight For Harley-Davidson
OEM Part#: DB00082 $60
http://www.bkrider.com/bkrider/DeepS...me%client-url%
2) Harley mount part #69611-06 $42 online at Amazon.com
(Don't get confused when you see the pictures of this mounting block online. The picture shows a short stubby block which does not accurately show the height of the actual block)
3) Visor (Optional): Part 69734-05 $35 online at Surdyke.com
As for the wiring, I cut the plug off my old twin headlight and soldered it onto the new wires. And then covered with heat shrink tubing.
Simple as that! I also added a SilverStar bulb

Scott, I did the same switch on my fatbob so i could use the MS fairing from my fatboy. You will need the fatbob mounts and the fatboy fairing. Running the fatboy headlight will also permit running a hi wattage bulb (i use 100/60) without fear of overheating and melting the plug. I got a complete black fatboy headlight with mounting block (drag specialties) off ebay a couple of years ago for about 80 bucks.
