Both tanks carry a different part numbers. I had the same question awhile back.
Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. When I taked to a parts guy at the dealership he said both tanks carry a different part number is reason enough to pass on different year tank.
Indie shop told me the same thing too. Said the Mo co is always changing little things that may not work from year to year even though the outward appearence looks the same.
My guy thinks there is something to do with the fuel gauage count down feature and the fuel float sending unit that doesn't fit in the older tanks. Hes not sure on Dynas but seen it on other models.

Different part numbers are for different paint, they are the identical tank.
Harley has used the same EFI pump setup since EFI was first introduced on Dynas.
I run an o8 FXD tank on my 05 FXDWGI and it was a straight bolt on, only thing I had to change was gauges, which is what I wanted.
Your guy does not know what he is talking about, and HD will not let you know what parts will swap.

Thanks 8541 Hog good to know.
I'l be buying a spare tank for mine. They didn't tell me anything about superceeded
part numbers.
I want to have an extra tank because half way though riding season I get sick of looking at the same paint job.
I got this for this season

Tank
I put a 2010 FXDWG tank on my 2006 FXDB with no problems, everything bolted right up. I put my internals (pump and everything else) in the new tank with no issues also. I don't think there are any real differences between the tanks and years other than color and badges.
