Is that still holding up? I want to do similar and was on the fence with powder coating. I like the clean aluminum look better but not if they just get pitted again.

If you take time to do them right keeping them looking good is easy.
I made a jig to use my drill press that cuts time and makes it easier to do.
Very simple to make, you use your axle to hold it in place, the drill press turns the wheel for you making it easier and faster.
I do water sand some to get the crap off the wheel easier so it will polish better.I use a 6 inch wheel, get em at lowes hardware. Hit it with brown compound first then the white, then hand rub with mothers. The compounds can be got at lowes to.
here is the jig
Drill press and jig in use
This is one of the wheels I did
Takes less than half the time this way and gives you a better mirror finish.
I did the lower fork legs at the same time.
I use either 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper to get the wheel ready for polishing.
I use a piece of Styrofoam as a backing for the sandpaper. The polishing I use a hand drill with the 6inch wheel that I mentioned.
I can do 2 wheels in around 4 hours, this does not include removal or re-installing.
i touch up the wheel only when changing tires. I just keep em clean in-between.
