New pipes on the way... should i replace the exhaust gaskets?
Hi all. Ok, so i have a set of Vance and Hines Black Big Shots on the way. Miss them from my old fatboy. My bike will love them! ... and my credit card hates them. hehe
Was just wondering what I should do about the exhaust gaskets. I didnt switch them when I installed the exhaust on the fatboy and didnt notice any leaks especially at the exhaust port.
What would you guys recommend?

Personally I don't always change them when removing and replacing the same set of exhausts. But when its a different type of exhaust I always do. The ends tends to be a slightly different shape and the crush-fit gaskets don't always seal well.
Its only a few bucks and 30 secs work to replace them.

For V&H you want Screamin' eagle gaskets. I think they're like $16 a pair from the dealer? I've been through them all they're the best for V&H exhausts.
Also stop by AutoZone, Pep Boys, etc and get a 1 3/8" socket. Got that tip from forum member rounder and it will help you immensely installing the gaskets since they crush easily, it allows you to apply even pressure all around while pushing them in. Take out the old with dental picks (also from the auto store), use paper towels etc to clean the exhaust ports really well to remove any resistance to new gaskets, and finally you can apply a light film of dish soap to the SE gaskets to aid in installation. Get them started by hand evenly into the port then lightly drive them in with the socket. Fool proof. .
And since they're new gaskets, torque the nuts down maybe 2 turns at a time alternating. I was able to get 4 threads showing on all the exhaust studs when I put my pipe back on last week without over torquing anything.
