Harley round air cleaner cover and gasket 29591-99
My setup: 2001 FXDL
1. SE high flow air filter with stock carb
2. HD black round air cleaner cover part# 29400-08 (stock for 2008-2010 Crossbones)
I know that this has been covered many times but here are my pics for the gasket that is recommended and sometimes needed to allow the air filter surface to make full contact with the inside of the cover. This may not apply to everyone's setup but there have been problems with other round air cleaner covers, too. There are many things that you can use in this situation but in this case, I am using the HD service gasket.
With your cover and air filter removed, place the air filter (SE high flow or K&N HD-0800) inside the cover. The surface of the AF should make full contact with the cover. Pickup the assembly or flip it over and there should be about 1/8-1/4" space between the threads of the air filter and the air cleaner cover bolt hole.
The K&N filter comes with a gasket but it may not take up all of the space between the cover and filter. You might not even have a gasket on yours. This is where gasket #29591-99 comes in handy. It's self-adhesive and you stick it on the inside of the AC cover. The gasket will also hold the cover in place firmly and keep it from turning.
What happens if you have a big space before using the gasket? Well, the center bolt ends up being the only thing supporting the AC cover and with all of the vibration going on, it will either crack your AC cover or it will break loose the press fit nut on your filter or possibly crack the metal housing on the filter. Also, if your leg is putting pressure on the cover as in riding with forward controls, etc..., it will probably add to the chances of it breaking. I spot welded the back side of my air filter nut to insure that the nut doesn't come loose, too. I do not have forward controls.
Hope this helps someone!!!

SE air filter vs K&N HD-0800
It appears that the SE (HD Screamin Eagle) is just a little taller. Both of them have 72 pleats. The top and bottom circumferences are the same. Harley has rubber on the top and the K&N is metal. The K&N is pre-oiled
The new K&N HD-0800 comes with a new foam gasket. I did not have to use it because I have the Harley gasket attached to my air cleaner cover. The distance from the air cleaner screw hole opening to the face/threads of the air cleaner measured the same and mine is @ 3/32".
Attached is also a pic of where the old HD SE aircleaner nut was spot welded on the inside of the air filter because it cam loose probably from over tightening.
The vent hole on the backing plate is plugged and the vent hose is run to the bottom of the bike. It runs down and across the front of the transmission cover and then down between the engine and inner primary. Notice that I attached a hanger to the first bolt on top of the trans cover to help keep the vent hose in place. It's the kind that you can easily bend into shape. The hose outlet is hanging at least 1.5 inches clear and free of the bottom of the trans/engine.
It's true that it's not rocket science. I've come to appreciate articles and pictures, so every now I try to contribute something.

17025-03a
Previously. I upgraded the breather assembly to HD 17025-03A (stamped steel upgrade). The original OEM's were Bakelite (synthetic plastic) and then I replaced them with the 2 piece/servicable cast aluminum upgrade and now the stamped steel upgrade. I drilled out the return oil hole in the rocker plate as suggested with drill bit size #43=.125. My engine is stock and I do get a vapor mist drop (oil drop mixed with water) out of the vent hose after I park the bike but never any oil blow-by as I ride. That has never been an issue.

Engine crankcase vent hose
Maybe every 1,000 miles or whenever I think about it, I will wipe off the bottom of my inner and outer primary, etc... just to see how much grime has been accumulating from the vent hose. I'll have to say that it's not enough to worry about it blowing back on my tire. I think about it but on the other hand, it's not enough to concern me. Now, a leaking shifter shaft/inner primary seal will gunk it up pretty good.
