Default DIY bobbed rear fender with stock struts... advice

So I got this 2000 FXDX, and am beginning to sink my teeth into getting it just the way I want it. I have been researching the **** out of the rear fender and my options and thought I would bring it here, as I'm sure someone on here has done what i'm thinking and i want to see how it looked. I love the look of the dyna, but i ****ing HATE the protruding tail light. I am already planning on removing it and the license plate, side mounting the plate and converting the turn signals to run/turn/brake lights with possibly a bobber "stop" light. My question is has anyone cut the rear fender right at the struts? Or does it look better to just have the hole from the light/plate filled? Would a street bob fender fit my bike? I want to keep the stock struts as I run a small solo bag on them and want to keep that, and for the support when I ride 2 up. Hoping someone has done this and has some pictures/advice/ideas.

What was your strategy for this whole project? Did you get everything installed first, fender i mean, then go back and retro the tails in, then finally paint?

Old user "Muddyape" (last post 2015) bobbed and relocated his fender. His bike was a huge inspiration for me.

Many of his pic links are broken now but I should still have several in my personal archive if you want more.

I really like the 'bobbed fender' but cutting those fender struts is a very big step to take. Did this on a Sporty I had and when the time came to sell her I couldn't get anyone to buy what was basically now a solo ride !

Very true. Muddyape eventually moved to a Rocket Bob's Voodoo fender. Those are minimalist, but stout enough to hold a passenger.

I did this to my 98 Superglide b/c I also hate the light sticking out. Cutting at the back of the fender at the struts (vertically) looks like poop. I ended up using a raw 98-02 sporty fender from J&P cycles. It fits the struts just fine and it cut right at the plate mount ( I swear the fenders are the same). If I could post pictures I would. PM me and I can send some via email. At least if could give you a idea.

That IS a funny picture!!

For the OP, have you looked at the Street Bob/FXDB rear fender? Sounds like that would be what you want.

I did something very similar to my 1997 Sportster (I know, not a Dyna, but it applies). I cut the struts back to just past the shock mounts, put on a $16 Amazon tracker fender and bullet style run/turn/stop lights and side mounted the plate. Cost next to nothing to do and really cleaned up the rear of that bike.

These pics are before the bullet lights which I mounted on the rear shock stays.
