I took my "00 apart with 36K miles and could have gotten more miles out of them. On the other hand I checked my '03 that had 14k and they looked worse, so I went with a Screamin Eagle hydraulic setup on both bikes. It was easy to do myself. Check the tensioner shoes and go from there. Gear drive is more expensive to do, plus you have to check that your crank runout is within specs. I personally don't know of anyone that has had a catastrophic failure. Not to say that it can't happen. A lot of threads on the Forum about this subject, do a search.
In my Dyna they were shot at 33K. Ready to crack and break off. They are cam chain tensioners. In my softail they were still ok at 40K but I replaced them anyway.

i had the same situation at about the same milage it was good excuse to do the 95 and head work and change to gear drive if the crank specs out,
no problem on my 02
