Talking Frame and engine Number. (VIN)

Hello

Yesterday i was out checking out a used FXDBI from 07 and i was checking out the VIN and the engine number and i got very confused. (this is my first harley)

Anyone can tell me how i can check if its the original motor?

The only thing that matches in them are the last 6 Digits and the GX that should be the model FXDBI.

So is it the original engine and frame?

Cheers and sorry for the bumb question!

More then just 6 numbers should match..

it should start with

5HD1GX4
Next digit is the introduction date
Next digit is VIN check digit
Next digit is the year
Next letter should be K
and the last 6 re sequential numbers

out of the factory, all of the vins are the same, so everything should be the same if it is original frame/motor

Well the local harley dealer in Denmark (Caps-MC.dk) told me that only the last 6 digits are the serial number.

5HD1GX4187KXXXXXX

GX47XXXXXX

The last 6 digits on mine is a match but the rest is kinda not..

* 12th to 17th characters- Identifies the sequence of the vehicle for production as it rolled off the manufacturers assembly line.

Dosent that mean that if the last 6 numbers is a match its the original engine and frame?

Engine cant be the same as the frame VIN.. the frame has 17 and the engine got 10.

Beginning in 1981, Harley started using a 17 digit VIN number on the frame and an abbreviated VIN on the engine case. As always, the legal title must match the VIN number on the frame. If the title and frame VIN reads 1HD1ELK12BZ123456, the engine case number should read something like ELKB123456. VIN number rules described under the 1970 - 1980 Harley models also apply here.

So it should be the original engine thats on mine..

It looks like this has change a lot over the years. I've got an '06 and the only matching numbers from the frame and engine are the last six numbers. It's definitely the original engine.
The owners manual has a good description of the the frame number but not the engine number.
