Default speaking of new tires

i need a new back tire too on my '08 super glide, i'd like to go a little bigger than the 160, what one can i do without having a handling or safety issue. i once had a kawasaki meanstreak, went from a 180 to a 200 and it looked cool but handeled like crap, went back to the 180. would a 170 or 180 fit?

First you'd have to find out the current rim width is of your rear wheel - then look up your current tire to see what the actual width is - just because it says it's a 160 - it could be larger or smaller - then measure your current tire distance from the tire to the nearest point on the bike that would touch with a wider tire - most likely a belt guard or frame.
Then look up the stated width of the tires you are looking at and do the math from current size and available with, verify it will fit on your rim and you will have your answer.
You might also run into the same handling problem as with your Kaw if the tire you pick is mounted on a rim not as wide as recommended.

Need new rear rubber myself and was thinking of bumping up to a 150 from the stock 130, but other than saving less than a dollar i've found no good reason to do so.

Just put a Pirelli night dragon 180 on mine. Fits perfect. It's designed to fit a 4.5 rim

180 night dragon in my fxdb.. World of difference from stock tire. The bike feels more solid. Handles better. Just feels like an entire different machine. A good quality tire is what matters.

I used to use Pirelli's on my VTX and they held up great, good idea, thanks. I would imagine a 180 would look badass on my bike.

I went through the same thing, wanting a wide tire that looks cool. After doing a bunch of research on here I decided to go with the Michelin Commander II both front and rear. It made an incredible difference over the worn out stock Dunlops. I realize that some of the difference was just from replacing old tires with new tires but it is now a whole new bike.
Tar strips, small cracks in the road?? I see them but I never feel them. These tires never follow a tar snake or a crack. They might not be the greatest in the rain but it is not that rainy here so I don't ride the wet very often. hey are supposed to last a long time and so far I see no wear on them after about 2000 miles. I hope everyone is right about the long life.
I don't ride the bike hard or push the limits of the tires. As far as I am concerned this is my cruiser not a racer.
