Default Should spokes alternate directions?

The only way I'm getting the spokes to come out even without sticking far out is that the inner spokes face the same direction and the outer spokes are both going the opposite direction.

On the rear rim I'm not having that issue, actually had to alternate layers to get them to be close to even all the way around.

Is this an issue as far as safety goes? All the spokes and both rims are brand new, spokes are from Buchanan. Any input would help.

I assume that you are using the spool hubs and after market drilled rims.. It can happen.. Don't worry about it.. HD spools have a pattern that dictates a where the spokes will meet the rim.. There are 2 possible ways the rims can be drilled.. If they don't match up, the laced pattern can have spokes on the inside going the same direction.. Now you should be able to lace up a Dyna/Sporter hub either way tho all the spokes go to the inside of the hub.

I'm using a wide glide hub with a 16" drop center rim. Good to know that the spokes will be fine. I'm not doing the lacing and trying myself, taking it to a shop after all the spokes are powder coated

The service manual provides a good description of the lacing pattern. The spokes should cross over each other on both sides.

Are you using the wide glide hub on your street bob?

Here is a pic of my wide glide hub laced, seems the inboard spokes run counter clockwise (looking at wheel from right side of bike, same in pic) and outboard spokes run clockwise. Its the same pattern as the rear stock wheel. Hope this helps.

That's how my front wheel is comin out. The rear spokes alternate direction inboard and outboard. The fact that they do doesn't really bother me since I will have bags on and you won't really see the rear wheel.
