I am getting ready to strip down a 74 shovelhead motor. I'm a little nervous, this is my first time getting my hands dirty in this sort of project. The motor is competely in tact right now, it was just pulled out of a bike that was last ran about a year and a half ago. I'm putting it back in its original frame with its original trans, but want to be sure everything is up to parr before I do so. So anyone have any helpful tips for me? I would surely appriciate it!

 

Take lots of pictures when you take it apart and be sure you have a service manual and it would help to have the parts catalog (for the exploded views and part numbers), and have fun with it. I did a 76 sporty two years ago and had a blast doing it, turned out really nice.

 

Good advice from Toy. Do some looking in your area for someone with Shovel experience that you can call on for help if/when needed. He will likely be a grey beard but also likely be happy to help. Can't agree more with Toy on service/parts manuals and lots of pictures.

 

We have Shovelhead bikes/engines here all the time.
Sent an 84"er home Monday, and currently building a 106", along with the many other jobs here.

Good idea with the pictures Toy! I have a service manual (the one my dad picked up when he bought the bike in 75) but a parts manual is in my to get list! Thanks for the imput, I really appriciate it!

 

We need to probably buy new ones........ours are actually just about worn out..........
