Default oil won't go drain into tank

Changing oil on my Blackline lastnite. Took out tank drain and filter and let it drip for hours. Put drain plug back in and went to bed without filter installed. this morning I put the filter on and proceeded to add oil. Only 1 quart would fit in. I figured I had an air block so I spun the engine several times. No luck. So I started it. Oil level stayed same. Cracked filter and let some oil out. Tank level didn't change.. Now What..... Thanks for any help.

Did you remove the correct drain plug? Did you remove the filler cap? Did you purchase a shop manual? This is a 20 minute job not an overnight one!

I am hoping you removed the drain plug for the oil "tank" and didn't pull the plug from the bottom of the engine.

Yes, I'm no newbe. First new Harley was a 1973 XLH. This Blackline is my first softail but my 27th bike, mostly dressers. Air has to be blocking the oil from going down but how can I bleed the air out? thanks

Follow the hose from the drain-plug/frame point to the oil tank. Maybe it's kinked?

Missed that you are a Softail. Drain for oil tank is in cross bar behind and below transmission. You should not pull any crankcase plugs. Especially the tapered pipe one. The case area is very thin there and a 1/2 turn too tight will shatter engine block. Someone did that not too long ago. The NPT one and is used to check for sumping and goes into the cam galley.

Go buy yourself a factory service manual, there's a good chap. You've plainly done something wrong and the book will put you right.

You probably should not be doing this. Take to someone who knows what they are doing so it won't cost you an arm and leg later on.
