Default "Houston, we have an FXR problem"

Of course it's the greatest motorcycle ever invented! Silly question.

Moving right along; I rode this 91 FXR I bought back in June to Oklahoma from Tennessee last week. Encountered a few issues. One specifically I need help with. I will say since I had limited seaat time on this one I was smart enough to pack a tool box full and bring it along. So first problem, bike started starving for fuel. I had used the reserve earlier in the day and figured it had'nt been used in ages. Well I did some roadside carb cleaning. Took care of that. Then a couple hours later the shift lever fell off. Luckily I caught it before it hit the road. Worn out forward controls.... A little electric tape and a hammer and voila! Then heard some clanking later on. Found out my oil filter mount is completely hangin by the hoses. I used some bailing wire to get home. Now HERE's the issue. I looked on the mount and the threaded hole is just thrashed. Is there an OEM type bracket I can buy? I'd rather not relocate it if possible. Thanks fellow EVO-ist's

Why not repair the hole? Timesert or Helicoil, or go the next size up in metric with a tap. Either way, cheaper and easier than buying a new bracket.

Does the bolt come out of the frame so I could replace it with the one that fits if I tap it?

Yes, the bolt comes out. There may be some disassemble required. I haven't had to go there, and I'm not real familiar with the FXR, if I seem to recall "remove starter" may be involved. I seem to recall people saying they can get to the bolt head with the right wrench. You'll just have to look at it. If the bolt threads are good, Helicoil is the cheapest and easiest. You can get them at any auto parts store. Put some loctite on it and let it sit overnight, then put it back together.

I've been turning wrenches for 25 years and I don't know what helicoil is. Guess I should do some research. Thanks all.

Looks like Td got ya covered. Ya probably know it by a different name, been around for decades. Time sert is a cool thing but requires a little different tooling.

Good luck WP
