Default 1990 touring mainshaft question

I have a 1990 Electra glide. 5th gear and 2nd mating gear have some iffy spots on the dogs. Andrews sells the new 5th gear for 130 and 2nd gear for 60.

But I can grab a complete newer like 95+ trans with an oil pain for around 300. Kind of makes it foolish to stick with my old one since I'm moving the battery anyways, this would make it much easier to fit a full size one

My question is... Would the newer trans just bolt in with my clutch hub and everything? I know the 1990 mainshaft was one year only. But the part numbers for the clutch hub are all the same.

Thanks for any input
Mike

I put a 5 speed mainshaft from a later bike into an 1987 FXR so I would imagine its all gonna fit.

Clutch hub is the same. As for the one year only 90' shaft the only difference is high (5th) gear OD. You can use a 90' shaft to upgrade pre 90' to spline clutch, but in order to do this with a 91' and later you have to use a 91' and later high (5th) gear.

That is good information....can you use the whole cluster in all years though?

As long as you have a matching gear (this is kinda complicating to explain in text). I'm not sure what year it was introduced, but early gears had a "flat" top to the teeth of the gear. Later years the gear teeth were "sharper". You can't mate a flat gear with the sharper gear, but other then that they are interchangeable.

Like I said it's kinda hard to put into text if I can find a pic I'll post the difference.

Thanks for the info. Do you know when the starter bolt pattern changed? As in, 93-9x is the trans that will bolt in with an oil pan

Thanks
Mike

don't know if this will help my chopper has an 85 motor a 93 softail transmission case and a 2004 guts. my 93 ultra classic has a 2005 gear set shift drum paw and forks all I had to do was install a longer shifter shaft bushing about .250 longer. when I bought the starter for the chop it said 91-99 but it came with 2 different gear setups

On my friends bike I slid the whole works from a 2005 5 speed right in , keep the old shifter assembly as the new set-up doesn't let you re-push shifter in high gear like original also the covers have the neutral switch in a different position, was a PITA to find out later

yes, if you keep the gearset complete a late model will go into an old case plug and play.

I`ve got a `99 gearset in my `89 (with a `90 clutch).

I don't need a new gear set. I'm after a newer case with the engine oil pan built in.

Also, a 2005 won't work because on a touring bike the pivot shaft changed sizes around 02 or somewhere. Would have to change a lot more. So it's 93-01 or similar. Just confirming if my 1990 starter will bolt up at this point

Thanks
Mike
