Default Cam cover bushing ?

Been doing alot reading and thinking Yea it hurts this ol redneck BG
I`m gonna order a new cam cover Custom Chrome has been suggested locally. Their site mentions the bushing has to be sized. Kinda got the idea that many of these get changed with only the end play set or atleast ck`d. I got ahold of the PO he`s not sure if the cam bearing was changed, he was second owner. I`m gonna tear it down and get things ck`d. A friend says he can measure the bushing and cam but does not have access to what is needed to size the bushing. He`s retired. In what y`all have done with these are the odds for or against me in needing to have the bushing or bushings sized. If against me I need to make arrangments in advance . BG We ride most year round here Thanks WP

It will need to be reamed to the correct clearance.... you could re-use your existing bush but I wouldn't necessarily recommend that with an aftermarket cover.

If the cam slides into the bush without excess pressure then it will be OK....many Harley parts come with instructions to check fit and clearance that are purely there to avoid the manufacturer taking any responsibilty for any issues that arise after fitting....but that doesn't mean you shouldn't check the fit.

Compare it with your original cover....assuming the bush isn't munted and if not sure take to a machine shop.

The odds are that the new bushing will be fine. Make sure you check it though.

The whole point to ream the cam cover bushing is to make sure the bushing ID is in line with the bearing in the R/H case....In a nutshell, it's the same thing as having a level foundation for your house.

Some aftermarket covers will say Reaming required and some say no reaming required.

If I remember right, If you replace the bushing it has to be staked to keep it from turning. So if you took out your old bushing and installed it in the new cover, you would also have to stake it. It is in the manual how to do that.
