Default High altitude trip coming up.......

Well I did a search but i did not find exactly what I was looking for...."01 carbed FXDWG, Stage 1 setup from the stealer 25000 miles ago. Everything is happy and runs well below 6500 ft altitude. This summer will include some 10-11000 + foot passes in Colorado. I am concerned about an overly rich condition and hot start issues. I know the CV is supposed to compensate for altitude, but can it handle these elevations or do i need to schedule a stop at the Stealer in Colorado Springs for a re-jet? OR, just carry a pocket full of leaner jets?

Not a problem,I've had three different carbed Harleys up high and only experienced a little less power.
Been up over 12,000 feet on Trail Ridge road in Colorado with a Mikuni HSR 42 with no trouble.
Been Over 11,000 feet with a CV carb and it ran fine.
Both bikes were tuned at only 300ft.

The CV carb will compensate quite a bit. You will be running a little rich, but don't sweat it. If you have a good tune now, it will be fine. Of course, if you're on the rich side now, it will only get worse.

I drove up Pikes Peak (14,000 ft., loaded, and wives on the back) and encountered absolutely no problems. The other bike that was with me had no problems either (both '91 FX models). We spent a week in Colorado doing all sorts of altitudes and the bikes never noticed. Go for it!

PS. You really should check out Pikes Peak it's an incredible experience. And try to geeet on some of the lower altitude roads through the mountains they are great rides.

I agree with the rest. From the top of Pikes Peak (14,110 ft) to Hamton Beach New Hampshire on the 85 FXRC without a hitch except in my back[:@].

I live in the Colorado Front range, just north of Boulder. You are going to LOVE riding in the Rockies. Your bike will too. thinner air = less power but displacement makes it happen!

Well, your motor will be fine but your gas mileage will suffer greatly. I went on a high mileage trip last year with a bud that had a carbed bike. We were at elevations from 11,000 ft down to sea level. I have FI and had constant MPG of about 40-43, in the high elevations, he went down to 30 or less. In the low elevation, he was running the same as me (40-43). He never had an issue with the motor not being able to pull the load.
