I think it is based on your post count.

People pay way too much attention to that, In my Opinion. I'm sure Stephen Hawking's first post on any Scientific Forum wouldn't be treated the way some folks on here treat posters without lots of posts.

 

They used to have humorous ratings, similar to a MC. They got politically correct last year, and called new, based on post count, so basically meaningless like most PC terms.
