RAM X grip mount
IF YOU USE A SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 4 OR SIMILAR LARGE PHONE, DO NOT USE THE RAM X GRIP MOUNT.
Several weeks ago, I posted a thread asking about the Ram X grip mount. There I posted that a representative at RAM told me that he wouldn't use the X grip on his bike. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/gener...-note-4-a.html
Yesterday, I took a nice ride to Columbia, SC to get some BBQ. The roads in SC, aren't the greatest. On the way back, I had my 3 week old Note 4 phone in the X mount. I was doing about 70-75 on the road in a 70MPH zone. I hit some debris on the rode and my phone flew out the mount and down the road. From my rearvirew mirror, I saw my phone bounce up and down and of course, a truck ran over it...
Fortunately, all of my pics are backed up on the cloud but dang, I had a 32GB SD card with over 4,000 songs and several hundred playlists--all gone.
Today, I called Ram and the representative told me that they get alot of calls from people who use the X grip on bikes and have similar issues. He said, they're great in cars but not good for bikes, especially larger phones. He offered to reimburse me for the X grip but said they can't do anything for the phone.
I've ordered a new phone; however since it's a new phone, its on back order and will take a few days to be delivered. I love Ram products but going forward, I will never use the X grip ever again. i know alot of guys will say, "Ive gone thousands of miles and never had a problem." But directly from Ram, alot of people using them on motorcycles do have problems with them. Ram does suggest tethering the mount but they don't offer any advice on how. I was told that they're working on quality mounts but won't be offered for the Note until atleast Spring.
For all who don't believe that this is not a great product, check out the following video that I found on Youtube:

I'm using the the X-grip with my droid razor maxx. It's in an Otterbox and I think that gives it more grip. It's solid. However, when the rubber grips get wet they become very slippery on the tangs. I've lost several. Replacements are cheap, but it makes me a bit nervous.

i wondered the same thing until i read the thread that he linked too. apparently, because the guy told him that the company wasn't focusing as much attention on android as they were apple, he decided that the guy's personal views weren't valid and decided to go with it anyways.
mebbe next time he'll listen to the sales rep?

I know a great way to stop that problem, put the phone in your saddlebag or in a coat pocket for safe keeping.

Thanks for the heads up. I almost bought one for my S5 in an Otter Box when I was getting ready for a ride to NC. Something told me to wait. I'm glad I did.
Two things - The Otterbox might have saved the phone from the fall. The truck, not so much. Yikes.
I pay the 5 bucks or whatever a month for the insurance. Considering how expensive these phones are, it's worth it imo.
