Default Why is it called a Derby cover?

Back in 1957,there was a prominent motorcycle club that had begun a ritual if riding to the Kentucky Derby annually and selling custom motorcycle parts. During this particular derby, for some reason, they sold mor of the season covers than anything else.

The name stuck.

Heres another theory:
It may have been named after the derby hat which was also an ornament of expression. This conjecture is very likely since the first Harley Davidsons were fabricated around the same time that derby hats were in fashion in the US and were worn by some eccentrically lavish individuals who attended the Kentucky Derby horse race

Ha nice job on the copy paste of the ehow article!

I have no idea of the origin. I like to have spare gaskets and o-rings at home so a couple years ago I bought a dozen drain plug o-rings and a derby cover gasket. I intentionally called it a clutch inspection cover gasket and confused the daylights outta the 20 year old kid working the parts counter.

It was named after the famous 1947 Roller Derby Riot in Hollister, California.

Look at the "Derby" covers on old Tin primary Knucks, Pans and Big Flatheads. When removed the domed shape with flat flange resembles a Derby Hat.

Mystery solved.

"Kindly speak English, and drop the vernacular."

"Vernacular? That's a derby!"
