How many miles before not buying used?
Hi Merry Christmas
I may not have worded the title correctly, I know that everything matters as far as maintenance etc. but at how many miles should I be concerned when buying used. I am looking at either a RK or a Electra glide classic, trying to get a 103 but budget may dictate a 96. It will be a 2009 or newer for the new frame.
I am looking at both a Harley dealership and National Powersports in Pelham NH.
Is 24,000 miles a lot for these engines, I am new to this, give me a BB Chevy from the 60s then I am at home.
Thanks for any insight you can give
Dave

I say the perception is that any bike with over 50k is on the way down hill. Look at the condition of the bike, and that will tell you the mindset of the owner. Many Harleys are running over 100k in stock motors these days. Some have not fared so well due to poor maintenance. I read back in the 90's that Harley MoCo. bought back an Evolution dresser with over 300K documented miles so they could study it.

I would like to know that a used bike was ridden on a regular basis, but not into the ground. Here where there is a 9 month riding season, I would think that 3-5,000 mi per year would be ideal, including maintenance records. I would also inquire about how the bike was rode. If it is 95% city commuting then no thanks. Inside storage would also be mandatory.

I always get a chuckle out of people who believe a $20,000 motorcycle is "used up" after only 30,000 miles. Are you kiddin' me?? You pay 20K for a bike it only lasts that long? This isn't 1940. 25,000 miles? It's just now getting broken in.
