OP~
It sounds like you've never ridden a moto before. If that is true, then I say give a call to San Diego Harley and ask for Rose. She admins the rider training there. Who knows, you might even see a goofball named "Norty" there!
Scaling 400 is no problemo. Had a student about 15 or 20 years ago that is 7' 5.5" and weighs "about 430 to 450." He rides a sporty, from the pillion seat. Oddly, nobody gives him crap about that. (Then again, he can bench press a Buick...)
Forward controls will be most comfortable for you.

I've seen some pretty huge people riding Sportsters.
Back in late '74, I was pushing about 250+/- lbs when I bought my first H-D, a gold '75 XLH.
That was also the first H-D that I had ever been on and after owning and riding a 750 BSA and two Honda 750's, I couldn't believe how small that Sporty was!
I sold it with about 400 miles on the odometer and bought a '75 FLH (Electra-Glide) the following spring.
These days, I'm under 200 lbs and my wife says I look like a "Circus Bear" when I occasionally get on her Heritage!!!
My advice would be to take the motorcycle safety rider's course and sit on several bikes before making an investment.
