Default Gas Gauge

I have a SG and my gas gauge is not working properly! When I fill it the gauge reads full but once I use a bout 1\4 tank it starts to jumping back and forth low to full! Is there a simple fix or should I just get a new gauge?

thanks for the help!

Mine won't go passed 190 and when it gets down to where the "low gas" light comes on...which is around 30-35 miles...I still only put in 3.5 gallons. My Blackline would always go ove 200...most of the time around 220-225.

Sounds like the sender in the gas tank is failing.

Yup, that's the sender. Sometimes you can bend the wiper on the rheostat to make better contact when there's a problem like the OPs. Sometimes you can bend the float arm to get more accurate readings. P.I.A. to get out, though, so it's not the greatest setup for guess-and-try fiddly adjustments.

Be sure the float is quite clear of the side of the tank, that's a real frequent cause of problems.

The real question is where do you put your gas cap when you fill up?

I thought the HD gas gauges were for decoration. I use the trip meter on my my old Springer and the speedo/tacho gauge on my Fatboy.

Uh huh, no chance the fuel is moving in the tank.

Ignore it and watch the R (remaining miles) readout.

May be a simple fix. H-D does not tie wrap some of the wires and the float hangs up sometimes.
