What engine fits what frames?
I have been keeping an eye out on Craigslist alot lately, trying to get a "feel" for pricing on varuios items to build anothe bike.
Sometimes I find stripped frames. SO I have a question.
What motors fit what frames? Meaning, if I get and older Dyana or Sportster frame, can I fit mupltiple types of motors in the frame?
Like, will old Ironside and Evo motors fit in the same frame?
What about TC88's?
Basically, what I am asking is all the motor mounts on all the various engines over the last several years in teh same location?
Will I have to worry about height of the Juggs?
And also, does the same apply for transmissions?
Are does anyone have any links that can tell me this info?
Thanks

That's a good question. I can tell ya where an american musclecar from the 70's can, and cannot interchange... but bikes? Dammit man.
I'll be watching this thread.

You can fit pretty much anything with a little bit of work. I've seen sportys in big twin frames (looks god awful). But what are your plans? For example, you can fit a evo in a shovel frame, but you need to make clearance with the backbone and seat post.

So what I am wondering is not only space, but will I have to weld on new motor mounts for each type of engine?

The short answer kolni is you can make anything fit anything, but is it beneficial? The long answer is sporty frames wont take different different family v-twins without a lot of work. Its easier to stay in the same line evo in evo style and so on.There,s a few common things such as ,you can go from old to new easier than going from new to old,a knuckle will go in a new style frame and hook up to the trans easier than a twin cam will go in to the old frame.Really any of the older engines will fit newer frames real easy. There,s no straight answer really.Just as a rule nothing goes in a sporty but a sporty, and nothing goes in a bigger v-twin but another v-twin.I,m old so I have seen a lot of different combo,s and lucky to have friends that refused to accept HD,s mantra that you cant do that,so they did it anyway.

I agree with what has been posted. You can make anything fit it just depends on your ability to manufacture or modify existing parts to fit the particular frame you have. My suggestion is if you start buying assorted years and mixing things up make sure you do a complete mock up of ALL parts and make sure you can get it to work right. Then take it apart for final finishing and final assembly. Good luck with your project.

Seems to me (having not done any of this) that the way to do it is get the engine, tranny, etc. and then build a frame around it if you need to. Maybe buy a frame and expect to mod it. Take a look at some of the custom bikes; there's hardly any recognizable shape of an original frame. Remember, what a motorcycle is amounts to a powerplant transferring its energy to a wheel and providing a place to sit and a method to steer. Going from there, the sky's the limit (well, sort of).
