Default Items stolen off bike, and Insurance won't cover it

On our way back from Sturgis, stopped for dinner and while inside somebody decided they needed the tent and helmets off the back of my bike more then I did.

Made a police report and when I made it home spoke with my insurance company (Wolverine). They stated theft of accessory items is only covered when the whole bike is stolen, not if items are stolen off the bike.

Just curious if this is how all insurance is or if anybody has insurance that covers theft from their bike.

I plan on checking with other insurance providers to see if theft would be covered, then changing insurance companies.

Often home owners coverage will cover things like that. You may want to try with that company.

Wow, I never heard of that. I know most insurances won't cover accessories, even if the whole bike is stolen, unless they are listed seperately with the insurance company with their replacement value. This usually only costs a little bit more in your premiums than it would by not listing them.

That how I understand my insurance policy. Any added accessories will cost extra on my policy. I pretty sure the accessories have to be mounted on the bike. I don't think any insurance company will cover items that are being carried on the motorcycle.

My truck insurance will cover items stolen because they were in an enclosed and locked vehicle.

Sorry to hear that but i tell you insurance companies are notorious for taking you money in the big print but not paying out in the little print ..... put this one down to experience then change you insurer

Not sure about tents and helmets, but I have Nationwide and they cover up to $3500 in extras at no extra charge, anything over that you have to pay a bit more for the extra and custom work, but it's not too bad.

Yeah, that BIG PRINT, little print thing is quite accurte. When I set up the policy it was to cover up to 1000 dollars in accessories in case of an accident or theft..............I just didn't look close enough at the theft thing........not a real big deal. The Sturgis trip was just over 3700 miles and it was my wife's first big trip on her bike.........trip was great and the theft was the only bump...............I'm ok with that.

Try your homeowner's policy. Good luck!

You have to read your insurance policy to know what's actually covered. If you have an insurance agent (and didn't purchase your insurance "on-line"), make them work for their commission. Ask them to give you a rundown of what's covered and more importantly what is NOT covered.

As another poster suggested; call your homeowners carrier. Personal property should be covered anywhere. Your tent and helmet are not accessories on your bike.
