You could try tapping in a slightly larger or metric size. The key is to make sure they go in all the way.

Do a quick search and you will find enough information to fill the Library of Congress.

I have also used Torx bits, pretty much whatever I had that would provide enough purchase on the cap screw.

And get an impact screwdriver, makes these chores easier.

cheers

Go to your nearest hardware store and buy an easy out extractor set. Saved my *** a few times.

Before boogering the screw head you should have soaked it with AeroKroil, overnight, and then used an impact driver with the proper sized bit.

Now, if hammering in a tight fitting Torx bit doesn't do it, you'll have to try drilling out the head for an EZ-Out or taking the head off completely and then grabbing the shank with ViseGrips once the cover is off.

Or take it to a pro.

No doubt! I've had multiple bolts break simply from being torqued to specs. It's amazing how cheap the quality is these days.

if you have access to a hand held cut-off saw you could grind a common head slot
in the head then tap it going counter clockwise to see if the screw will loosen.

Ya DON'T use a damn impact driver on a timing cover. Get the easy outs, and take it slow and careful.
