compensator question
Ok, I can't stand the loud clunk in my primary anymore when I hit the starter. Gonna change to the SE compensator and MAYBE do it myself. I've read that you have to grind away some of the inside of the case to change out the rotor. My question is exactly how much do I really need to grind out? I'm not really comfortable taking a dremel tool to my bike. Dealer wants 900 bucks parts and labor to do it but they will take out the inner primary. Any help would be great. thanks....

Curious if the newest version introduced in August (SE2)? requires the same trimming of case material. Btw... Did you search in the drive train section? Ive seen detail there.

I used an air grinder with a small dremmel style stone on it. Covered up everything with towles to keep out the grit. Did not have to remvoe very much. .2 in maybe? Olny around the edge, not the whole thing.

I have 69+K on mine and it is all still original. Yes even the timing chain shoes. I got rid of my clunk by tightening the primary chain a bit. I have yet to even have to adjust the clutch cable. I am real easy on my junk however.

I had mine go out last month in 12k miles. Luckily, it was still under warranty. I wonder if they put the SE version in? LOL! Probably not.

you only have to grind a small bit of the frt section of the inner primary. pull the outer off and run your finger around the inner edge of the inner cover from about the 10:00 position to the 6:00 position. that lip you feel is what needs to come out. the original rotor will not clear that lip. after removing the chain, sprockets etc but before i started grinding, i sprayed down the inner cover with brake clean, stuffed rags in between the rotor and case then used painters tape to seal it up as best possible back to about midway of the primary. then covered the rest with rags .. start grinding..

I just finished doing the Comp on my Ultra. I considered grinding the inner primary, I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I pulled the clutch basket loosened the inner primary bolts, and it gave me enough room to get the old Comp out and the new rotor in. Then my OCD kicked in and I started worrying about the self sealing bolts that hold the inner primary case. I pulled them out two at a time and applied a little permatex aviation for a gasket on the underside of each of the bolts. So far so good, no leaks and all the noise during slow speed first gear takeoffs, as well as the noise I was getting on hot starts are gone.
