How many people has this happened to?
When I bought my '99 cop bike from a friend of mine, he told me Harley lost his title, and he had to get a duplicate. It cost him $60 for the duplicate. Fast forward 4 years, and I'm about to buy another bike from another friend, and he was told by Harley they lost his title also. So it's gonna cost him the $60, probably more to get a duplicate so he can sell the bike to me. Does Harley have a problem loosing important paperwork for more then just the bikes I want to buy?.,,,

Why is Harley keeping his title work - I have my title work at home in a safe...is he financing the bike and it's not yet paid off or something - if yes, then Harley should eat the costs to replace....

I would imagine because there is a lien on the bike. So your saying when I pay off this bike and Harley is supposed to send the title at that point, they are going to tell me they lost what I never had and I have to pay for it?

Harley doesn't issue titles. Harley would supply a MSO to the state that the bike is going to be titled in. The state would issue the title to the owner or the lienholder.

I believe you are correct... why would Harley have the title unless Harley is financing it...

It is the lienholder`s responsibility to give up the title to the bike owner once he pays off the lien.

Is this the same dealer on both titles? If it is it could be a $$$ raising scam on their part. Sounds fishy to me.

In New York, the owner gets the title and the title will list any lienholders, if any. When a lien is paid in full, the lienholder will send the owner a paper indicating that the lien is paid. The owner can then take that paper along with the title to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and they will issue a new title (without any lienholders) to the owner for a fee. I have also traded in vehicles by supplying the buyer with the original title and the paper from the lienholder. HDFS was the lienholder on one vehicle I traded in. The state would be the one to issue a title and it would most likely be held by an owner or lienholder but not by the Motor Co.
