The small gear on the starter jackshaft is called the pinion gear. The big gear (on the clutch basket) it engages is called the ring gear.

Out of curiosity, how much voltage does the battery have? A weak battery (not enough voltage) can cause the ring/pinion to not marry properly and cause the issues you continue to have...

Hey DFW,

Battery is new. Starter problem resolved. After disassembling the starter and putting it back I adjusted the starter so that there was no binding of the shaft.

Starts up as it should; however, now I have a new problem. She will idle fine. I pull choke as normal, hit the starter and she cranks right up with no problem. After letting it run for a while I'll push the choke in and she'll adjust down and run at idle. As soon as I apply throttle she will sputter, back fire and die if I continue to apply throttle. If I release the throttle, she'll idle with no problem.

Wondering if there some type of trash in the carb. Didn't have much gas in the tank. So I thought maybe she's was running out of gas. Went to station got fresh gas and filled tank but still same issue...

BTW, bike has been sitting idle for the past year...

You need to clean and rebuild the carb. Your jets/passages are varnished up and need to be cleaned to get the bike to run properly again. James Gaskets makes a great carb rebuild kit with all new o-rings, gaskets, seals and float needle. Get one of these, have your carb body and jets cleaned in an ultrasonic machine, then rebuild the carb!

Hey folks, well I finally removed the carburetor today and discovered that it is a Screamin Eagle carb. Question is how do I know what type of kit to buy in order to rebuild the carb?

Thanks in advance for any feedback regarding this issue.

Best Regards,

Todd

Sorry folks for being such a newbie. LOL My mistake, it's a Makuni Carb. Any who, removed cleaned replace and voila, she runs as good as new. Was able to take her out for a test run and made it back home without having to call a tow truck. LOL...

Thanks again HDF for all the support that has helped me get the old girl back up and running...

Best Regards,

Todd
