yes, you should get a repair manual, it's the best investment you can make for your bike.
But to help get you going, at least to see if this is what is giving you grief... here is a pic of the map sensor location... on my Road King 96", it sits right behind the air filter between the jugs above the air intake, not sure about your bike. The harness wires going to the map sensor were angled at almost 90 degrees, here it doesn't look so bad because I had straightened them out a little bit, but just gently pushing those wires a little made the bike had all kinds of fits.
