Default do i NEED a battery for XLCH?

Do i NEED a good battery for running my 74 XLCH? Since it doesnt have electric start (kick start only)and produces its own power for lights when it is running why is a battery needed? I picked this up on ebay for a winter project ($1450) and have been buying little things for the last month.

Yes, you certainly do need a battery to run your kick start Sportster. The main reason is because the bike uses an electric ignition that requires 12v power. As a practical matter it also needs a battery to power the head/tail lights.
The generator produces 12 volts, but your lights will dim at a red light, so get a battery. You will need it if you plan to start the engine up........pg

I have owned a couple sportscars powered with generaters. When the generater went out, the battery fired the plugs and I got home. Easier to ride than push.Good luck with it...

Couldn't you put in a magneto and be rid of the batter?

You can put the magneto in, but it's expensive, and since it is usually driven off the tach drive on this model, some have had problems.

Try this as an experiment - disconnect the battery, and have at it. If you get it started, it won't run worth a crap at idle and some above. The generator doesn't put out enough juice at those low rpms.
