Default Really high oil pressure???

Had a problem with my oil pump recently and ended up re building it. I put about 150 miles on it since with a little oil leaking from the push rod tubes. During this time it was running about 20-30 psi when cold and about 10 when warm. My gauge is measuring directly from the oil pump. The real problem started today when I replaced the push rod cover seals. I put cork ones in. Then I took her out for a ride and the oil pressure was WAY up even when it was warm. I'm talkg varying from 15 to 40 psi depending on rpm. At 2000 rmp it would build pressure close to 40. Any time the pressure rose above 20 it would start smoking and blowing oil from the push rod tubes.

I'm using 50 weight oil.

ANNY advise would be appreciated!

The bike is a 1977 1000.

Normal oil pressure measured at the pump is between 5 and 10 psi for a warmed up engine.

Check to see if oil is returning to the tank ...

With the engine not running, remove the oil filter; then start the engine and observe in the oil tank. Oil should plop into ther tank from the return line.

Check to see if oil is getting up to the rocker covers ...

Remove the 1/8 NPT plugs from the front right of the rocker covers. Then observe with the engine running. Oil should plop out both of these.

Let us know what you find.

I checked the oil bag yesterday when I was having the problem. Soon as I start it oil would return to the tank steadily then plop in intermittently from then on. Everything in the tank appears correct. I have the vet line from the cam cover routed to the middle port in the bag, the return is going to the top port by the oil cap, and the supply line is connected to the bottom port in the tank.

I will check the rocker boxes today when i get off of work.

thanks Mick!

Sounds like maybe crankcase over-pressurisation. Check your engine breather tube is clear and not blocked. Check the one-way foo-foo valve in the breather is set to let air out of the crankcase and not in.

I checked and made sure i was getting oil to the rocker boxes and all is well there. The crank case breather valve was my next stop. I fitted an automotive PCV valve to the bike because I cant find a FOOFOO source... I'm thinking the thing may have worn out or it's not performing properly.

That sounds liek the source of your problem. Make sure it is plumbed to let air out, not in. And yes, PCVs may not be made to handle the volume of air going in and out of a v-twin.
