Default Why does Engine and Frame Serial/Vin not match?

The Vin on the right down tube forging and on the neck plate match. but the number on the engine itself is almost matching but missing some numbers. its seems that it is the same number just abbreviated.

A member let me know that the engine number is just an abbreviated version of the VIN.

Thanks POCOCJ.

If you Google search "Harley VIN" you will get lots of info.

The factory service manual that covers your year bike, 99484-nn where nn is probably 85, has the specific info for your year [which i assume from your question is between 1981 and 1985].

To buy a copy of the FSM put the part number into the Google and eBay searches; or buy from a local bike shop or HD dealer.
