Twin Cam Oil Pressure Issues
#12
I am experienceing the same issues with oil pressure light coming on @ idle. I just installed the HD Screamin Eagle oil pump, support plate, new bearings, hydraulice cam chain tensioners and adjustable pushrods. The bike absolutely runs great except for the fact that my light comes on intermittently at idle and my oil pressure is about 50% of what the spec is (using a external, known good oil pressure gauge). I am stumped any ideas?????

Having same issue, after installing new cam tensioners, new oil pump, new push rods. Started bike up and got the red engine warning light, removed oil filter to check if oil was getting to it. It should have sprayed out but no oil. Went to re-assemble the push rod tappets were full of oil. Any idea what issue could be?

Idle speed must be checked in all twin cam engines. Idle should be no lower than 700 or 800 rpm for correct oil pressure at idle. I'm quoting the rms off the top of my head. This seems way too high for us old schoolers but it is correct. I'd start there first. Check your maintenance manual for correct idle. Adjust. Then, oil viscosity. I'm using 20-60 redline here in Arizona....except for the coldest months. Makes a huge difference in engine noise as well. If that doesn't fix it. Then start the shakedown. Mount an oil pressure gauge on the bike to see your pressure as you ride. Continue shakedown as required.

I have an 03 Dyna Superglide and my engine light was coming on when riding about 60mph. It would go off above and below this. I put an oil pressure gauge on and I was running low pressure. I put in an oil relief spring from http://www.ertproducts.com/ and it brought up my pressures to HD spec. I took it for a ride and the engine light came on more then ever. I took off the oil pressure switch and cleaned it with carb cleaner and no more engine light. I'm glad the switch made me check my pressures as we all know oil is the life of the engine, but it does no good if the engine is not getting the oil it needs.
