Crankcase oil in the primary

Crankcase oil in the primary
Long story short, broke down a couple months ago on my 91 sportster, killed the battery, thought it was a clutch issue, had to fix up the other bike in the garage to sell so I could have the cash to fix the harley. Went to start the bike the other day and checked the oil it was very low. I decided to change all the fluids. I drained the primary and got about 4 quarts out of it. My manual says it takes 25 ounces in the primary and 3 qts in the oil tank. I took the primary cover off and everything looked good, no metal shavings or anything obviously wrong. I think I blew a seal or gasket somewhere where the crankcase and primary meet. My book doesn't show much detail on this. Has anyone had a problem like this I'd like to know where to start before I just start taking everything apart. Is there a gasket behind the engine sprocket and stator? Any help would be appreciated.
