Primary oil required after gasket change in front oiler system
I am coming out of the Evo world and have a few Shovel related questions. Bought a 77FXE shovel with the primary self oiler outlet tube intact and believed working.
Changed the primary gasket and when I pulled the cover off about 2 to 4 ounces of oil drained into pan.
Question:
1. Now that I put it back together should I dump a few ounces into the primary or let it fill up by itself? I have a 5 stud clutch pack with blue springs if that makes a difference.
2. Have only looped the block once or twice but when I pulled the clutch in at the stop sign it seemed that the bike wanted to creep forward a bit. Is this just cold, low on primary oil or clutch out of adjustment?
Thanks in advance,
Ron

Hi thanks for your response
Yes bought the manual you referred to before even riding the bike.
I am coming from an Evo world, so this is what I read about the Shovel. I understand the basic mechanics of the system, the 3-4 drips per minute and the scavenge at the bottom of the primary. What I could not find in the manual was is it a one for one on the supply and demand meaning that it should scavenge more than it drips or if residual oil build up in the bottom of the primary was normal and good for the clutches and chain if the basket should be sitting in a little bit of oil at all times.
Thanks,
Ron

you could isolate the system as it keeps chain debris / clutch cast off from entering the engine as squid has rightfully said
the clutch needs adjusting and or the clutch discs are sticky from years of oil vapor, and that will make it creep no matter how you adjust the clutch, consider new discs it makes life easier

Shovel oil in primary
Will probably take advice and isolate the primary as you guys have mentioned.
I am not a fan of the rubber hoses with a bolt jammed in it, and pulling the feed nub out of the oil pump and drilling and tapping is even scarier.
Here is my thought and feel free to chime in. On the oil feed thinking of turning the adjustment screw to off. Unplugging the line at the primary and inserting a solid piece of steel in the rubber line to block it off (probably stainless) then attaching it back to the primary cover so it retains a stock appearance. On the other two should I vent both to atmosphere with a filter or block one internally and vent just one to atmosphere.
Let me know your thoughts.

you can just connect the two 3/8 lines together under the trans - eliminate them at the engine
you can as said block them off with long shank bolts just cut the threads off
you can block them from the motor / primary both ways with plugs
the oil feed I like to use it as the vent snip it off run it up a bit wire tie and then down - from the pump put a screw in it the same way as the plugs
add one cup of engine oil only change it twice a year all that needs to be done
