Default tranny life

Does anyone have any data / info. on how many tranny failures occur? Wondering how many miles I can expect out of my five speed. It has 108K now and it is the only part of the bike that hasn't been replaced or rebuilt. I have run Red Line Heavy Shock since it was new and changed every 5k or so.

Thanks

I would recommend a bearing, seal, gasket rebuild at 100k. Not that hard IMO. I did mine a years ago.

Unless you meant the other kind of tranny then id say switch to Astro glide and loosen the handcuffs. You'll be fine.

Wink

The sorts of failure that may happen are a broken internal spring, leaking seal, worn out bearing. On the other hand there are bikes that have done much bigger mileages than yours. It's difficult to answer your query as failures are not very common! You can either ride until something prompts you to act, like oil under the bike, or talk to a local indy about a total rebuild, including all bearings, seals, etc. I suspect the cost of a rebuild will prompt you to leave it for a while!

Good advice on both.

Normally I'd agree Dan but at 125,000 miles on my bike a worn out tranny led me to re tear down my fresh motor chasing what I thought was a bad bearing on my crank. Ended up being my tranny bearings. 100k I recommend a rebuild. Just my opinion.
