Friends '97 RK ..Noisy in first four gears but is quiet in 5th. I don't know about bike transmissions but in a car I would think it is countershaft bearings. Thanks for any input and yes the fluid is full and clean.

Sounds like you have the right answer. I had the same issue with my bike just a few months ago. Had the tranny rebuilt with new seals and bearing. It turned out to be the countershaft main bearing.
I stripped the bike down and let an Indy with the correct tools and presses do the work with the tranny still in the bike .... saved a lot of time by not removing the tranny out of the bike.
Everything was assessable once I stripped off the primary, starter / solenoid and the exhaust.

Good luck with getting the tranny fixed!
Thanks for the great reply, doing it in the bike sounds like the way to go plus not needing a jig to hold the box. Awesome! Thanks again.
Pulled the trans apart and it was the needle bearings the gears ride on. About five sets were bad but the trapdoor bearings were OK. Replacing everything anyway. Total cost around $400.00
