ULTRA fine steel wool and some Dawn with bleach. Put the soap on first on COLD pipes rub it in raw with your hand and then gentle work it a little with the steel wool. Wipe it off with a rag and then rinse and polish it with whatever your regular polish is. I've been using that trick for years on everything from pipes to chrome bumpers on the transport.

Flitz polish works great. Even takes off blueing.

I've had good luck with Mr CleanMagic Erasor. Get pipes warm, use a work glove, get erasor wet and keep scrubbing. I've taken off boot marks as well as a melted shopping bag.

GooGone. Any drugstore or auto parts store will have it.
