Default Clutch Spring Tension

I have a 1974 Harley Davidson Aermacchi SX-125 2 stroke. I need to know how much I tighten down the 4 clutch springs. My service manual does not say. It only states: Clutch spring free play = 1.62 inches, Clutch spring in use 1.14 inches. Does that mean I only tighten the springs down about 1/2 an inch? The 4 threaded studs that are attached to the clutch have an a stop on them that sticks up approximately 1/2" from the base of the clutch hub. The nut for the clutch spring is attached to a threaded cylindrical rod that is approx. 1/2" long as well. Do I tighten the spring down until the threaded rod meets the stop on the studs attached to the clutch hub? If I do that it will compress the springs more than 1.14 inches. Any information will help. Thanks.
