1979 FLH 80 primary help

Default 1979 FLH 80 primary help

ok so I got a 1979 flh 80 basket case I am fairly mechanically inclined I have rebuilt the engine and tranny and now have in place it has electric start and kick I had to order the shaft for the starter can I go ahead and assemble the primary and put the starter in after also it appears that the guy before me has filled in the oil passages to seal it up I heard that you can do that and put tranny fluid in the primary up to the bottom of the clutch is this correct any help would be nice I have worked on inline 4 bikes before but this is a whole new experience when I got the bike in pieces if I took it apart I would have no prob but this is getting tough

If you get some clutch plates that are designed to run wet, Barnett is the way to go. http://www.barnettclutches.com/clutc...s-springs.html Just do not get the level too high. The starter ring will catch and fling enough oil to keep the primary chain lubed. I used to run my Shovel that way. All was good.

Normally your bike has a dry sump primary with dry plates. The oil pump supplies and removes oil, to keep the clutch dry. The passages he filled up are the supply and drain lines. Later bikes are filled so the oil just touches the clutch drum, but dry plates won't work well, so as OLD 96 suggests use wet clutch plates and Barnett are a good choice (I use them!).
