I had a thermarest self inflating pad. Worked great when I was a few years younger and a few pounds lighter...lol It really didn't roll up that small. I got a good twin air mattress and love it. It is a little bulky, but my back really appreciates it. I don't mind the extra space. I did a 19 day camping trip last summer in the mountains and tent camped the whole time. With my air mattress ( got at Wally World) I sleep like a baby. Everyone is different, but this will be the way I camp from now on. Good luck and let me know if I can help you in anyway.

My Thermarest gave out on me two summers ago. I had used it for around 15 yrs. That summer I spent close to 2 months sleeping on the ground and it just became detached from the inner padding. I would add some loft by blowing it up beyond the self inflate point and it just couldn't hold up.
Bought a couple Wiggys winter pads at a pawn shop a couple years ago that i might give a try if we get a warm spell this month.
