I was driving it around came home parked it and I went back out to start it and it just clicked, I checked the batter even did a load test and it checked out fine. I also hooked it up to a 600 CCA motorcycle battery as well. But I took off the primary cover and as soon as the pinion gear grabs the flywheel it just clicks, I took the starter solenoid apart and rebuilt it new contacts the whole nines yards and still does the same. It's the original starter from 1983 as far as I was know.

Not sure, but if it's the original it may have the brand stamped on it.
Should be Hitachi, but it MAY happen to have a Prestolite since both were used on FXRs and FXRTs in that year.
Hitachi is short, Prestolite is long

Thanks guys. I did find a sticker on the side or the starter motor but someone painted over it. I'm trying to get some paint stripper or something to take the paint off of the sticker.
my guess it's a Hitachi the motor only is 3 inches long. What the difference between Prestolite and Hitachi?

If that came off of a '83 FXR...It is a pretty well worked over one...That is a Later starter.

Edit; I would have said it is an '85 starter..but...only on sportsters..Looking it up, the FXRS got that starter in '89.

What Racepres said... looks like you got an updated inner and outer primary... and maybe transmission and clutch too.

Maybe...post a pic of the primary...you can mount that type starter on FXRs and touring bikes by enlarging the hole in the trans...does it still have a solenoid mounted next to the starter...or a plate covering a hole?
