Can an Andrews AB grind camshaft be run successfully with solid lifters?

I've seen references like this here and there: "you can run solids on a hydraulic cam, but you don't run hydraulics on a solid cam."

Wondering if that's a true "rule of thumb", or BS.

I got a new Andrews AB in my hand even as I type. Also have solid conversions in the bike. No way I can afford to switch to a hydraulic set up. So hoping I can run this cam.

Thats true to a point for shovels meaning as long as it's a mild cam to start with , there,s a boatload of math to explain why I'm not getting into . The " AB " will work ok but your going to disappointed running it , if the gear on it is timed correctly it doesn't come on till 3500+ RPM or around 60+mph . Unless your a stop light hot rodder you will not get much use out of that cam .

Also you may have to shave the insides of your rocker box's a bit to get clearance so the spring collars don't hit on some yrs . Been a while since I,ve done any Andrews cams so do some checking around on that .

Any cam can be used with solids,but you cant run any(big,aggressive cams) with hyd. Lifters

Your right. I would be disapointed with that, and for that reason.

Does the Andrews A-grind come on any lower?

 

How do want the bike to run ? You a hot rodder or is it your daily driver needing a little more omph ? You can get better low end & mid range or better high end , can't do both without engine work . I don't like Andrews cams for shovels they all are mid range and up performers 2800rpm and up your flat under 45mph . Best ones I've found are the VThunder series by Competition cams their designed for hyd. lifters . I've tried them all and the VT cams work best from 1000rpm on . Down side is only the first step up is bolt in the really good cams take valve spring kits . Check this link my help a bit .

I believe it's the other way around, Hydraulic lobes are ground with more of a hump to compensate, solids are a smoother lift and drop. So a solid tends to jump on a Hydro cam, a hyd lifter would follow a solid lobe but looses response.
