I have a question about a cam advance gear for my bike. 4* andrews gear from woods. had this for a long time, ever since I did the motor, but didn't put it in due to worrying about too much pre ignition. running the dave mackie .598 lift cam. intake closes at 50* abdc, exhaust closes 20* abdc. running 10.5 comp pistons with .045 gasket. Also running larger valves, but that should have little bearing on this. been wanting to put this gear in, will change intake closing, to 46* abdc. looking for a little more low end torque, but I'm not sure this will give it to me. not a lot of work to do, just don't want to do it and then change it back right away, (might wind up doing that anyhow!) just looking for some opinions to bounce off you "expert" builders, any help is welcomed
I'm no expert builder but have a little knowledge after 40+ years making a living around about everything with motors. All I'll say is I'm not a fan of advancing/retarding cams much. Ya may pick up some bottom with it but the cam wasn't designed to run there? Picking the proper cam is a better choice. Believe it or not, 4 degrees is quite a bit out.
there are reasons I picked this cam, and every cam has upsides as well as down sides. advancing cam timing is a great way to get benefits from both ends. I too am a pro mechanic, and I deal with variable cam timing all the time. that is different as that adjusts as the engine is running and this is fixed, but it is a common practice used by many. I was hoping to find some replies that have used a similar formula on a bike and how it turned out, thank you for your reply though, and I respect your learned opinion, and may in fact just leave my timing alone, in the end!!
well gear is in, bike runs a lot better harder acceleration, didn't detect any pinging, but there was a lot of traffic, and couldn't hear as well. bottom end torque felt better, overall pretty happy with the performance. bike feels like its 500 rpm faster than it is. like its down one gear from where you're actually at, when you twist the throttle. everything else seems good with it so, for me this went quite well. if anybody plans on doing it, I would do your homework, looking at your cam specs and make sure your motor will be ok with it
