RE: Upsweep pipes for Shovel?
Coolharley, Paughco makes up sweep pies for shovels (not sure if they sell direct or not). Also V-Twin sells upswweps for shovels from 70-84 for both rigid and swing arm frames (not sure who they get them from) and shovels for rigid and swingarm frames that they advertize are made by Paughco.
Not sure if your present set up has baffles in them or not but I am not in favor of "stright" pipes. I think you need a little bit of back pressure to get the best performance out of a street bike. My chopped pan is set up with straigt pipes that I inserted 10 inch steel baffles. Gives me good clean sound and good performance.

RE: Upsweep pipes for Shovel?
Dude,
I run an 1980 S&S 96" Shovel with 2" LAF. I have run straight drags (no Baffles) for 3 years now and love em.
I just came across a sweet deal on some Santee LAF at a swap meet in Houston a few weeks ago
so I wrapped em with some black exhaust tape and they ****in Rock man. A little deeper growl but not
a whole lot louder actually. I wrench most of my own stuff but dont claim to be a "Harley/S&S" tech by any
means. But I do ride my bike like I stole it everywhere I go. I have to say I really like these LAF pipes w/o baffles...you might want
to stick with them for a while just so you know the difference in the sound once you go to drags.
I have never experienced my Shovel needing much back pressure to speak of...just not necessary. The EVOs may need back pressure but man I run the hell out of my bike and smoke EVOs all day long...not to mention my neighbors 1200 Sportster which I spank on a regular basis.
I have had it dyno'd with the drags no baffle...I just went through the S&S E manual process to retune my carb after I put the LAF's on and I am bangin like never before...I went to the LAF's by the way because I needed to ad a kicker to my tranny and the Drags I had did not have room.
The only thing that has run away from me is a Bourget 114" S&S...but I had to let off cause my apes came back half way to my chest, so I will have to take him on again. From what I have learned from my motor builder dont worry about back pressure with a Shovel unless you are doing a bunch of running around in the mid range. I usually run ***** out or my Shovel oil wants to get a bit hot...Gotta keep that oil pump pumping at the maximum head possible cause the old Shovels will heat up when idling around town.

RE: Upsweep pipes for Shovel?
Hey guy try JPCycles, Part number 440-249. They are Dyno Power 1 3/4 upswept kick-out drag pipes for 71-84 FX models. I have this set on my 79 shovel hardtail and they work great. I had to fab a bracket because of the the hardtail but wasnt no big deal. Also try part number 440-380, about the same but they dont kickout and they have fishtails.
Hope this helps

RE: Upsweep pipes for Shovel?
Cool, thanks for the input guys.
Hey Jason, if I run these LAF's, I have two issues/questions though:
1. The front pipe takes up space and prevents using a standard mount oil filter bracket that bolts to the front/right engine case - what do you use?
2. How/where did you mount the lower part of the LAF's to the bike? I see it has a adjustable bracket thing near the end of the pipes, but there seems nowhere convenient for bolting them since the pipes terminate near the cone portion of the motor, know what I mean?
thanks
