Default What's the difference between a 72 and 73 front wheel?

I just bought a '70 FLH which is a bit rough. I know that it has a '72 or later front end/wheel because it has a disc brake. I want to replace the wheels as the ones I have are rusty - in shopping around it looks like '72 and '73 and later are different. How can I tell which one I have. Thanks.

Got to looking at a couple of books. My references say that 72 and 73 front ends were the same...disc front mounted on the left side. In 71 they were a hydraulic drum.

The only other big change from 72 to 73 was a change from hyrdaulic rear to a disc rear drum.

Hi Panz - thanks for the help. I posted the question on a Shovelhead.us and got the answer. The '72 hub is a drum brake adapted for a disc and '73 up are disc only hubs. Thanks again

The front wheel on a 72 Flh had a disc adaptor bolted to a drum brake wheel, in 73 they went to a totaly different hub. Rumor is that Harley did this because of the poor stopping ability of the 72 flh. Those adaptors are kind of hard to find, I just hunted one down to do a disc conversion on my 71 FLH
