I think what you are in for is a very good time! You didn't say if it had any papers to show how it had been maintained, but I would go through and check it before doing any long distance stuff. The fact that you can wrench will also save some mean green. Nice to see another 20 something bike still on the road.

First thing do you know if it had a valve job or top end since new ? most likely it did, since the valves were at a time of âlead gasâ do a compression test, you need a good battery this was one of the first generation electronic ign. It needs juice to run, HD gel batteries are great last for years.
This is no sporty, the ride will tell you that, does it have stock carb ? (one cable) ?
