Had to go back and read the whole sordid tale. What a saga. You're a good friend to help this guy out and hopefully, he gets his life together.
Makes me feel better about a friend of mine. While he isn't a drunk, he neglects his bike, does no maintenance and only fixes something when it breaks. I've trailered his bike a few times over the years as well. He just won't learn that a little preventative maintenance goes a long way on a shovelhead.

i have another friend who is just like this ! his bike is wired with speaker wire and scotch tape. a real pile of junk and doesn't even look at it until it doesn't start. he runs the tires down until the cord is showing. but he rides it everywhere. i wouldn't leave the neighborhood on it. it's a shovel and it has taken a beating and keeps on ticking.

Guy you should see some of the poor tired shovels passed my way through the years, try and treat a twinkie like that and it'd never leave the shop.

well this thing is running again. i went over to his house after he tried to start it with the button without the outer primary on. he had the starter all bound up as it over rode the ring gear on the clutch basket. he rode it all over the place yesterday and it seemed to tun good. the state sent him a letter and his license has been revoked for the next 12 months but he's going to ride and drive anyway. foolish after all the hoops he's had to jump though trying to stay out of jail.
