76 shovelmotor just rebuilt ran 15 seconds and locked up.any idea's?the only thing i can think of is not enough end play.the guy that built the motor is going to make it right it's just a bitch we have to pull it out again.
As you are doing the take-down to remove the motor, look for things that may cause the engine to freeze (something in the primary chain, screw in the cylinder, or any other obstructions.)
I've run a motor without oil and it ran till the pistons seized. It took quite a while. 15 seconds is kind of weird.
looked at every thing and it's the motor the motor rolled over very easy with plugs out before trying to start it,kicked it over a bunch of times to get some oil going to it and when it started 15 seconds and wham, froze we'll know more later this week when it's all apart.
this is a friend of mines motor,we took motor out and took it to the shop that built it, i've never been to this shop before when we carried the motor to the back of the place i could't believe the total mess this place had going on,stuff piled to the ceiling could'nt put another thing on any of the work benchs.i don't know how they could do any work on anything they won't be working on any of my stuff i know that.i will say though they have been in bizz for 45 years the owner is 75 years old and talked to him for a long time, good stories and seems pretty sharp but he did'nt build the motor one of his guy's in the back did.we'll see how this turns out.

i knew a dude who was a total mess-- chicken bones on thework table -- crap everywhere -- but he built some bad *** engines and they lasted --- it only matters how clean one is during assembly -- larry didnt assemble engine with dirty hands even thought the place looked worse than a horders place--
and on the oil issue --had a due while i was in Pa in 1976 -- he had 70 wt oil in the bike and in the AM when he went to jerseyit was cold, cold, cold -- he didnt notice that he broke the key on the oil pump shat and drove the bike to A.C. nd back. he did say it felt like it lowed down but kept running none the less... when we put a new oil pump on it it smoked WORSE than a mosquito spray truck.. the ush rods were blue on the tips -- cam bearing was trashed but the cam didnt look bad -- fact wasit ran there and back with only the tad of oil in the cases..
15 seconds?? hmmm yeah probably wayyyy to tight piston fit --
Had the double timken bearing seize in a fresh built motor with less than 50 miles on it and I had set the endplay myself . Sometimes **** just goes south on you .
Take it down and start looking close at each area , valve's look good ? cylinder walls & pistons clean or scored ? Rod's free & check endplay & shake on them , do the flywheels roll ok with the heads off and how free with the jugs off ? About all it can be if everything clean under the nose cone .
